At first Yamaoka Myoa studied Confucianism with the Hayashi family and then became a disciple of Mabuchi Kamo.
Yamaoka Myoa was a scholar of the Japanese classics and also wrote humorous waka poetry. He is the compiler of Ruiju Meibutsu-ko (A Small Encyclopedia).
