Yamashina-no-Miya (Original personal name - Akira) was born in 1816 in Japan. He was the eldest son of Prince Kuniie, the 19th descendant of the Fushimi-no-Miya family.
Yamashina-no-miya entered the Kajiiji Temple in Kyoto as a priest under the name of Saihan in 1824. Forty years later he was recalled to secular life by the Emperor Meiji and was allowed to found the Yamashina-no-Miya family (1864), and was the councilor and the director of the Ministry of Foreign Affais and also acted as the adviser to Emperor Meiji.
