While a student active in Polish revol movement. Early 1890’s arrested while attempting to smuggle from Switzerland illegal proclamations for Lodz workers. After five years’ imprisonment exiled to Vilyuysk, Yakutsk Oblast.
Here in 1898 wrote Evolyutsiya sotsialdemokratii (The Evolution of Social-Democracy), the first part of his major work Umstvennyy rebochiy (The Intellectual Worker), and read it to his fellow exiles. Next year wrote part 2 - Nauchnyy sotsializm (Scientific Socialism). Both parts were hectographcd in Vilyuysk.
“The Intellectual Worker” immediately brought him a small group of followers. 1900 arrested on his return journey to European Russia but released on payment of a surety. May 1903 re-arrested and confined in Alexandrine Centr Jail.
Escaped and went abroad. 1904 in Geneva published 3rd part of “The Intellectual Worker”. 1905 all three parts were published in Geneva.
After 1905 Revol returned to Russia. Wrote under pen-name “A. Volume(s)’skiy”. 1906 the first two parts of “The Intellectual Worker” were legally published in Russia.
1908-1917 in emigration. After 1917 October Revol admin work. Until February 1926 worked for Supreme Economic Council as tech ed, journal “Narodnoye khozyaystvo” (later renamed “Sotsialisticheskoye khozyaystvo”.
