Career
From 1903 associate professor in Tartu and from 1908 in Khar’kov. From 1911 professor, Khar’kov University. From 1920 professor, Riga University.
From 1946 member, Latin Academy of Sciences. From 1929 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Studied connections between Baltic and Ugro-Finnish languages: did much to establish standards for the modern Latin lit language.
