Li Zicheng won the first Mao Dun Literature Prize and China's National Books Award. The book takes the peasant army led by Li Zicheng as the main line. In the autumn of the 11th year of the Emperor Chongzhen (1638 AD), Li Zicheng and the peasant army were almost wiped out in the Nanyuan battle in Tongguan of Shaanxi after fierce fight. Li and his army sneaked into deep mountains, keeping living with painstaking effort and they wanted to rally forces again. Later they entered Henan, occupied Luoyang, attacked Kaifeng, defeated Xiangyang, captured Tongguan and then arrived in Xi'an and conquered Taiyuan, so Li and his army were invincible. In the spring of the 17th year of the Emperor Chongzhen, Li and his army entered Beijing. The Emperor Chongzhen committed suicide with the demise of the Ming Dynasty.

姚雪垠
Yao was born into a family of landlord background in Dengzhou, Henan in 1910.
Yao used his fortune posthumously to institute the Yao Xueyin Historical Novel Prize (姚雪垠长篇历史小说奖). In 1930, Yao was expelled for taking part in student movement from Henan University. In 1940s, Yao started to write the novel Li Zicheng.
In 1950s.
Yao worked in Wuhan, and shortly taught at Central China Normal University. In 1957, Yao was labeled as a rightist by the government and he was sent to a farm to work. In 1961, he was rehabilitated by Mao Zedong, and he returned to Wuhan.
In 1963, Yao published his novel Li Zicheng volume 1 by the China Youth Publishing House (中国青年出版社).
During the Cultural Revolution was launched by Mao Zedong, his novel Li Zicheng was regarded as a banned book, Red Guards of the Cultural Revolution had attacked him, but Mao Zedong protected him against the attack. In 1999, Yao died in Beijing Fuxing Hospital (北京复兴医院).
