Yasuhide Matsudaira was appointed the 81st magistrate of Nagasaki in 1807. The following year when the English ship Phaeton entered Nagasaki flying a Dutch flag and holding members of Dutch firms as hostages he ordered the soldiers of the Hizen Clan to attack the ship, but as this was not enough to prevent the ship from escaping, he committed suicide out of shame.
