Yasutaro Tanabe was born in 1844 in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Yasutaro Tanabe took to engraving, and while studying under Shozo Motoki, was entrusted with the job of making matrix for the press. In the course of this he made many improvements in type casting.
He founded his own foundry (1883) and experimented with the casting of different sorts of types. He kept no secrets and was always prepared to travel far to teach others. He did much for the improvement of press in the Kansai District during the second half of the Meiji Era.
