Graduate Kherson Agric College. 1900 graduate Moscow Agric Institute.
1900-1906 director, Tomsk Agric School. Then lecturer, agric colleges in Saratov Province and Kazan’ 1906-1918 professor Stebut Women's Agric Courses, Saint St. Petersburg (Pctrograd).
1918-1923 professor, Petrograd Forestry Institute. From 1923 professor, Timiryazev Agric Academy, Moscow. Bred improved strains of Russian livestock.
On the basis of large-scale experiments with Red-Steppe, Kir and Astrakhan’ cattle proved that breed quality depends on maintenance and feeding conditions. 1936 demonstrated the feasibility of doubling and trebling milk yield with an extensive study of milking techniques at kolchozes in Moscow Oblast. Developed general guidelines for livestock breeding which ensured stock improvement.
Contributed large collection of animal skulls and skeletons to State Museum of Animal Husbandry, Moscow, which now bears his name. Wrote over 300 works, including several textbooks on animal husbandry.
Pioneer of zootech in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics: member, All-Union Lenin Academy of Agric Sciences from 1934.
