Mamontov Yefim Mefodyevich was born on March 9, 1889 in Peski village of the Russian Federation. Comes from a peasant family.
Mamontov's family moved to Altay in 1892. In 1917, he came back to his motherland. In 1918, he organized a partisan unit in Vostrovo village (now Volchikhinsky district of Altai Territory). Since October 1919, Mamontov was the commander-in-chief of the Partisan Red Army of Western Siberia. Together with the troops of the 5th army, he participated in defeating A.V. Kolchak’s troops on the territory of Western Siberia.
Since February of 1920, Mamontov was an assistant of the 5th army infantry inspector. At the head of the 1st independent Red volunteer Western-Siberian rifle brigade, he participated in the battles against Petr Nikolayevich Vrangel (1920).
