Specialist in variety, circus and mass shows. 1919 began to work on theater criticism, writing theater reviews from Petrograd for newspaper Krasnaya gazeta. From 1928 head, Leningrad Circus Museum. 1938-1957 artistic director, Leningrad and Moscow Circuses and artistic director, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Circuses Board. Leningrad Circus used his scripts for the pantomimes Lyudi morskogo dna (Seabed People) (1935), Shamil’ (1936) and Tayga v ogne (The Taiga on Fire) (1938). 1957-1958 foundcr-ed, journal Sovetskiy tsirk. Wrote first books on history of Soviet and European circus.
