1903-1917 associate professor, from 1917 professor, Saint St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University. 1913-1918 also professor, Yur’ycv University. 1921-1927 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Also professor, Moscow University. Specialized in modern and recent history of Western Europe and Russia. Wrote noteworthy study of French Revol and reign of Napoleon.
Belonged to so-called progressive materialist historians but refused to incorporate historical events into the framework of historical materialism. 1929 critized by the M.N. Pokrovskiy historical school for tenets expressed in his work Yevropa v epokhu imperializma, 1871—1919 (Europe in the Age of Imperialism, 1871 — 1919) (1927). In this work he denied that there was aggravation of the class struggle on the eve of World War 1 and laid the main blame for the war on Germany.
This contradicted both the postulates of the Marxist historians and Soviet policy toward Germany at that time. 1931 arrested on charges of complicity in alleged “monarchist plot” involving historians South.F. Platonov, South.V. Rozhdestvenskiy, Ye. V. Tarle, etc, and supposedly aimed at overthrowing the Soviet regime and restoring monarchy.
Returned from exile and resumed his leading place in Soviet historiography after official criticism of the Pokrovskiy historical school and a swing in Soviet policy toward Germany. Member, Oslo Academy of Sciences. Correspondent member, British Academy for the Advancement of Historical, Philosophical and Philological Sciences.
Honorary Doctor of the Sorbonne and Brno, Oslo and Algiers University. Member, Soviet Peace Committee.
