Education
Learned English at the Brown English School in Yokohama from 1869 and embraced Christian faith.
Career
Went to the United States (1888) and, upon returning to Japan (1890), became president of Aoyama Gakuin School in Tokyo. He was in the post for 17 years, rjis efforts were responsible for the merger Oi the three branches of the Methodist Church in Japan. Was the first Japanese to become a Methodist bishop and president of the Japan Christian Federation.
