Gojo Yorimoto was born in 1290 and was the second son of Yoshishige Kiyohara.

When the Imperial family split into the South and North Dynasties, he sided with the South Dynasty and his brother, Munehisa, with the North.
In 1336, following Prince Kanenaga, Gojo Yorimoto took part in the expedition to Kyushu. After 30 years of fighting in the cause of the South Dynasty he succeeded in suppressing the rebels in Kyushu, winning such warlords as Kikuchi and Aso over to his cause.
