After Ieshige Tokugawa was proclaimed Shogun he was sent to Kyoto as an envoy with the rank of a major of the Left Guard, lieutenant-general of Left Guard in 1760, in which capacity he helped the economy of his clan by adjusting finances, encouraging the manufacture of sugar and opening salt refineries. He is the author of a supplement to Mitsukuni Tokugawa's Dai-Nihonshi (Histoiy of Japan).
