Yoshiko Tokugawa

Background

Yoshiko Tokugawa was born in 1804 in Japan. She was the daughter of Imperial Prince Taruhito Arisugawa. Called Tomi-no-Miya.

Personality

Yoshiko Tokugawa was a woman of great wisdom. It is to her credit that Nariaki, her husband, could accomplish distinguished tasks toward the end of the Shogunate Period, and that their son Yoshinobu succeeded to the Hitotsubashi family and assisted the Shogun. He later became Shogun himself and faced the difficult times admirably just before Meiji Restoration (1868). After her husband’s death, called herself Teihoin.
