He graduated from Peers' School and English Literature Section, Tokyo University.
While a student, he joined the Shirakaba Group of young writers led by Saneatsu Mushanokoji and contributed Yoritomo, The Blind River' “The Drama of the Night” and other novels to the Shirakaba magazine. He started the magazine Fuji (1924) after the Shirababa was discontinued. Wrote philosophical and psychological novels including “Teacher Takezawa” and “On the Eve.” After World War II, he wrote a dissertation on the Emperor system. He is a member of Japan Academy of Arts.
