After graduating from Tokyo University with a degree in electricity was appointed member of Physics and Chemistry Research Institute. Was sent for further studies to Europe (1921) and upon return was appointed a section chief of the same institute (1928).
Yoshio Nishina was a pioneer in the study of cosmic rays and was awarded a cultural order (1946). Elected member of the Academy (1948) and then chief of the Research Institute. Was also chief of Japan Science Council.
