Before he entered priesthood he was known as Yoshishige Asayama, Lord of Asayama Castle in Izumo Province (Shimane Prefecture). Toward the end of the Muromachi Period, he went to Kyoto and was saddened at seeing the decline of the Imperial Family. Upon learning of the plan of Ryuzan Konoe and others of restoring the Imperial Family to its former prestige, he became a priest and joined their scheme.
He often went to Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture) to solicit the assistance of Kenshin Uesugi in their plan. He also enlisted the assistance of Nobu-naga Oda in rebuilding the Imperial Palace and reviving the Court functions and rituals. After Nobunaga was killed at the Honnoji Temple (1582), he buried his remains at the Amidaji Temple and prayed for the repose of his soul.
