Career
When the Seinan Affair (revolt of Takamori Saigo) broke out (1877) he was active in the cause of Saigo. When the revolt was quelled after Saigo had been defeated, Takashima was thrown into a prison at Hiroshima under the orders of the Meiji Government.
After release joined the Osaka Shosen Kaisha (OSK). Realizing the difficulties of shipping he persuaded the then governor of Fukuoka Prefecture to build up the port of Moji. His efforts were successful and a special construction company was formed for this purpose and he became one of its directors.
He joined the household of Clan Lord Hosokawa and was instrumental in retrieving the family fortunes of his master (1891).
