Йов Кондзелевич
monk Church leader Icon painter
Yov Kondzelevych was born in 1667 in Zhovkva, Lviv region, Ukraine.
After his training at the Zhovkva School of Artists, he probably studied painting at the Kyivan Cave Monastery Icon Painting Studio and abroad.
Yov Kondzelevych led an icon-painting studio which created iconostases in Zahoriv, Lokachi, and Bohorodchany as well as individual icons not only in Volyn, but elsewhere as well.
Kondzelevych broadened the traditional scheme of the icon significantly: he devoted much attention to the surroundings, particularly to the landscape, which he filled with distinctive architectural ensembles. Some of his numerous works have survived, including a fragment of the Bilostok Monastery iconostasis with depictions of six apostles and of The Dormition; the tabernacle of the Zahoriv Monastery (1695) with paintings of Joachim and Anna, the Trinity, the Baptism, Saint Barbara the Martyr, and Archdeacon Steven; and the famous iconostasis of the Maniava Hermitage, painted in 1698-1705.
In 1722 Kondzelevych took part in painting the iconostasis of the Zahoriv Monastery. His last work was "The Crucifixion" (1737) for the Lutsk Monastery.
Kondzelevych died on January 27, 1748 in Lutsk, Ukraine.
Kondzelevych was recognized as the most prominent figure in the history of Ukrainian painting at the turn of the 18th century. Among his best known works were "Icon of the Mother of God from the Maniava Hermitage iconostasis" and "Ascension".
The largest set of artworks representing creative heritage of Kondzelevych and artists of his circle is now on display at the Museum of Volyn Icon.
