In 1894 he participated in the Shino-Japanese War as captain of the warship Fuso. Became famous after the Yellow Sea Battle. He was attached to the Naval General Headquarters during the Russo-Japanese War. Later, he surprised the world by directing the successful refloating work on a sunken Russian warship off Inchon chon, Korea. He rose to the rank of vice admiral.
