Fujikawa Yū was born June 4, 1865 in Yasumura, Nuta District, Aki Province (now: Asaminami-ku, Hiroshima).

He attended from 1879 the formerly founded by the local feudal lord Asano school, then moved to the newly set up by the Hiroshima Prefecture middle school, and then completed an education at the Hiroshima Medical School (Hiroshima Igakkō)
After graduation he returned to Japan , lectured on the history of medicine at Kyoto, Kyushu and Tohoku Universities. In 1927, he became the director of the Nakayama Research Institute of Culture.
