Yu Zen (Miyazaki (Original family name)) was born in 1654 in Kyoto, Japan.
Yu Zen originally lived in front of Chion-in Temple in Kyoto where he used to paint scenery for Murayamaza Theater (1862). Late in life he moved to Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture). Fans painted by him came to be known popularly as Yuzen-Ogi. He also invented a new method of dyeing, which is now known as Yuzen-zome. It is not known whether he had any master or schooling, though his works seem to be a mixture between the Kano and Tosa schools painters and somewhat patterned after Korin Ogata.
