Yukiyasu Kanai was born in Kozuke (Gumma Prefecture), the son of Ushu, a painter.
Toward the end of the Tokugawa regime, Yukiyasu Kanai joined Manjiro Nitta and raised an army of 684 to do battle with the Shogunate. Their plot failed and he was thrown into prison. After the Meiji Restoration (1868) Tomomi Iwakura secured him a pardon and he was given a government position. Was later sent to China with Toshimichi Okubo (1874) and upon return held many important posts. Was elected member of Genro-in (Senate) and of the House of Peers (1891).
