1925 graduated Leningrad Polytechn. Institute.
1921-1927 at laboratory, Leningrad Physicotechn. Institute; 1927-1928 on foreign mission in England where, under E. Rutherford’s supervision, he completed extensive work on alpha particle scintillation method. With Ya. B. Zeldovich completed first calculation of chain reaction of uranium fission.
Helped elaborate theory of initiation and propagation of explosive detonation. Deputy, USSR Supreme Soviet of 1954 and 1958 convocation. 1943-1953 corresponding member, USSR Academy of Science.
Religiously inspired people justify violence, resist social changes, and attack on science.
