1898 graduate Saint St. Petersburg University.
From 1903 read course on chemistry of aromatic hydrocarbons at Saint St. Petersburg Technol Institute. From 1930 professor, from 1934 head, Chair of Organic Chemistry, Leningrad Technol Institute. Studied catalytic hydration of acetylene derivatives in the presence of colloidal palladium and platinum black.
1933 studied unsaturated compounds with chains similar to Vitamin A. Also studied aromatic polynuclear derivatives. 1927 first to synthesize iodine phenanthrene.
Devised original method of synthesizing phenanthroamines from phenanthroles. Also worked on the synthesis of various solvents, plasticizers and plastics. His methods were used for the industry production of camphor (from terpentine), tctrachlorphthalic acid, styrene, et cetera
