1889— 1893 studied in Moscow at Philharmonic College and on Drama Courses at Maly Theater.
While still a student played parts in shows of Moscow Philharmonic Social and Maly Theater. 1893 — 1948 (with intervals) actor at Alexandrine Theater (now Pushkin Academy Drama Theater, Leningrad). From 1898 taught acting at Saint St. Petersburg Drama Courses and Leningrad Theatrical Institute.
1918 helped found Tragedy Theater in Petrograd. 1919 helped found Bolshoy Drama Theater. 1922-1928 artistic director, Leningrad Academy Theater.
