Studied at Vakhtangov Studio. Graduated University of Marxism-Leninism, Moscow City Committee, All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
Since 1916 at Vakhtangov Studio (later Third Studio, Moscow Arts Theater). 1923 actor and producer, then Director, Vakhtangov Studio. 1924 founded his own studio, reorganized in 1927 as Theater Studio.
1924-1931 actor at Moscow Arts Theater. 1934-1935 Artistic Director, Central Red Army Theater, Moscow. 1936-1940 Director, Gorky Theater, Rostov-on-Don.
Since 1940 Artistic Director, then Chief Producer, Mossovet Theater, Moscow. 1952-1953 toured satellites with his company. 1955 member, Soviet cultural delegation New Delhi.
