Gunkin was born on January 10, 1952 in Somovo, now the territory of Zheleznodorozhny district of of Voronezh.

He graduated from the Department of Folk Instruments of Voronezh Music College in 1975.
In 1975-1987 he worked as an accordion teacher on Children's Music School №4 in Somovo. Since 1987, he has been working as a sound engineer on Voronezh State Television. He recorded many phonograms for Voronezh State Academic Russian Folk Choir named after K. I. Massatinitov and many Voronezh theaters.
In 1986 he organized a vocal ensemble "Zori of Russia" at Somov furniture factory, which was completely renewed in 1999. At present the folk group “Zori of Russia” is based at Culture House "Vostok" (Somovo) and is a repeated winner of the city festival of soldier's and patriotic songs "Defenders of the Fatherland". They recorded two discs with the songs from the ensemble repertoire, as well as two video discs.
