1903-1905 studied at Medical Faculty, Khar’kov University. 1905 expelled for involvement in student riots. Obtained medical degree in Switzerland.
1911 returned to Russia and obtained medical qualifications in Moscow.
From 1911 assistant professor under Associate of Arts Kad’yan, Chair of Hospital Surgical Clinic, Women's Medical Institute. Associate and (after death of North.A. Vel’yaminov) head, then from 1921 professor, Chair of General Surgery, Women's Medical Institute. From 1927 professor Chair of Hospital Surgical Clinic, 1st (Pavlov) Leningrad Medical Institute.
Took special interest in organisation and improvement of ambulance service. From 1939 chief surgeon, Soviet Navy. During Soviet-Finnish War and World War 2 worked on organisation of military medical service.
From 1943 until death, head, Chair of Hospital Surgery, Leningrad Naval Medical Academy. Made major contribution to clinical surgery. 1911 did first heart operation.
1913 was first surgeon in the world to successfully suture a wound of the ascending aorta. 1927 summed up his experience of heart surgery in the monograph Rany serdtsa i ikh khirurgicheskoye lecheniye (Heart Wounds and Their Surgical Treatment). In subsequent years specialized in diseases of the abdominal cavity, particularly acute appendicitis and intestinal obstruction.
At 24th All-Union Congress of Surgeons delivered important paper on the treatment of burns. During World War 2 changed his views on this subject and rejected open treatment methods. Took a special interest in traumatology and developed original methods of treating dislocations of the hip and shoulder, fractures of the patella, habitual dislocations of the elbow, et cetera
Did major theoretical and practical work on skin-grafting and other plastic operations, in which he reestablished the preeminence of such Russian surgeons as Associate of Arts Abrazhanov and South.M. Yanovich-Chaynskiy. In the latter years of his life did major research on surgery of the heart, the pericardium and the major vessels. Devised a successful simple palliative operation for angina pectoris.
1937-1941 ed, journal Vestnik khirurgii imeni I.I. Grekova. 1946 chairman, 25th All-Union Congress of Surgeons. Chairman, All-Union Sciences Social of Surgeons.
Member. Learned Medical Council, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Ministry of Health. Member, Medical Board, Soviet Army. Wrote over 100 works, including a number of substantial monographs.
