Education
He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Studies in 1979.
Career
He serves as the President of Aix-Marseille University. He taught nephrology at the University of the Mediterranean. He served as President of the stade marseillais université club from 1995 to 2004.
He was elected its President in 2004, and re-elected in 2009.
He served as Vice-President of the Conférence des Présidents d"Université from December 2010 to December 2012. Since June 2011, he has served as President of the Cancéropôle PACA. Since 2012, he has served as the first President of Aix-Marseille University.
