In 1966, Yvonne received a teaching diploma from the Caerleon College of Education, which later merged into the University of Wales, Newport. In 1974, she got an advanced certificate of education from the University of Bristol. Some time later, Cuthbertson continued her education at the Royal Horticultural Society, graduating with a general certificate in horticulture in 1995.
Between 1967 and 1971, Yvonne worked as a teacher at primary schools in Hampshire and southern England. During the period from 1971 till 1976, she held the post of a teacher at an infant school in Bath, England.
In 1976, Yvonne moved to the Meadows Primary School near Bristol, England, as deputy headteacher, a post she held till 1980, when she was promoted to the position of a headteacher at the same school. In 1988, Yvonne left the post of a head teacher.
Yvonne has penned several books, including "Women Gardeners: A History" (1998), "Beginner's Guide to Herb Gardening" (2001), "Success with Herbs" (2006), "Success with Organic Fruit" (2006), "Success with Organic Vegetables" (2007), "The Organic Fruit Gardener" (2011) and "The Organic Vegetable Gardener" (2011).
