In practice since 1900, he was first associated with his brother, Charles G. Davis, later established the firm of Z. T. Davis and Associates. His early work was chiefly two and three-story flat buildings, followed by a group of large apartment houses in south Chicago. During later years he was architect of the Court House at Kankakee, Ill., in 1911, St. Ambrose Church, 47th and Ellis Streets, Chicago, and was also widely known as the designer of baseball parks in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities throughout the country.
At one time Mr. Davis was associated with Gustave Steinbach of New York on the Quigley Memorial Chapel, and as supervisor of construction on a number of educational buildings in Chicago. During his latter years he was employed as Superintendent of Repairs on Schools for the Chicago Board of Education.
