Zaemon Korai was a Korean by birth. Originally named Li-kei.
Zaemon Korai came to Japan together with his wife at the invitation of Terumoto Mori, Lord of Choshu Clan (Yamaguchi Prefecture), shortly after Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s invasion of Korea (1592). Settling down in Choshu, Zaemon built a kiln and began the manufacture of a new kind of pottery which came to be known as Hagi Yaki.
His elder brother, who also came with him to Japan, engaged himself in the same business nearby.
