Hara Zaichu's favorite subjects were landscape, flowers and birds, he used rich colors. When the Imperial Palace in Kyoto was rebuilt in the Kansei Era (1789-1800), he was commissioned to paint pictures on sliding doors of the Palace.
His son Zaimei, grandson Zaisho and his great grandson Zaisen were all noted artists. All four of his sons went on to become professional painters.
