Originally Zanko Masuho served the Konoe family in Kyoto, but late in life he became head priest of Asahimyojin Shrine in Kyoto. By adopting the doctrines of Confucianism, Buddhism and Laotzuism he formed a new easy way to preach the tenets of Shintoism to the common people.
