Berman studied at Academia di Belli Arti in Florence, Italy (1972), and received a BFA in Sculpture from Philadelphia College of Art (1973).

A freelance photographer, Berman worked as a photo retoucher for Arton Associates in New York City in 1975-76. He won a CAPS grant in 1979, and a Residency grant from Lightwork in Syracuse, New York, in 1980.
Mainly photographing still lifes and interiors, the photographer is fascinated with the optical illusion of "linear elements laid out in three-dimensional space which also flip up to the two-dimensional 'picture plane' of the photograph's surface."
