Career
Zhao was a former director and party secretary of the PLA (People"s Liberation Army) from 1987 until 1992. Zhao was ranked three-star general in 1988. He served as president of the PLA Academy of Military Science from 1992 to 1995.
He was named vice-chairman of the Nationalities Committee of the 5th Non-Player Character (National Provincial Congress) and vice-chairman of the 9th CPPCC (Chinese People"s Political Consultative Conference) National Committee.
Regarding Chinese security interests in the Indian Ocean, Zhao stated that "We can no longer accept the Indian Ocean as an ocean only of the Indians."
Zhao is the father of Chinese composer, Zhao Ying.
