ANGARETIS, Zigmas was born on June 13, 1882 in village Obelyupay, Vilkavishk Uyezd, Suvalka Province (Lith). Son of a peasant.

Education
1902-1904 studied at Warsaw Veterinary Institute.
Career
1904 participated in anti-war demonstration. 1906 in Vilnius joined Lith Social-Demo cratic Party. 1907 at 7th Lith Social-Democratic Party Congress in Cracow elected member, Central Committee, Lith Social-Democratic Party.
1908-1909 ed, newspaper Darbininku Zodis (The Workers’ Word). 1909 arrested and sentenced to four years penal servitude at Pskov Prison. 1915 exiled to Siberia (Angara region).
There conducted Bolshevik propaganda. Wrote a number of articles which were published abroad in Lith Social-Democratic newspapers under the pseudonym Angaretis. From 1917 in Petrograd, ed, newspaper Tie sa (Truth).
Elected secretary, Lith Rayon Committee (Lith Section), Petrograd Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Organisation Member, Petrograd Bolshevik Committee. Delegation at 7th (April) All-Russian Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Conference and 6th Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks) Congress.
Member, Centr Bureau, Lith Section, Central Committee, Russian Social-Democratic Workers ’Party (Bolsheviks). Fought in 1917 October Revol in Petrograd. December 1917 appointed Deputy Commissar of Lith Affairs of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic People's Commissariat of Nationalities.
During Brcst-Litovsk peace talks sided with ’’Leftist Communists”. November 1918 sent to Vilnius on underground Party work. There coopted to Central Committee, Communist Party Lithuania
Late 1918 -early 1919 People's Commissar of Internal Affairs in first Lith Soviet government. Delcg at 8th Russian Communist Party (Bolsheviks) Congress. From 1920 secretary, Foreign Bureau, and member, Central Committee, Communist Party Lith (located in Russia).
From 1924 Political Bureau, member, Central Committee, Communist Party Lithuania Represented Communist Party Lith in Communist International Executive Committee. At the 5th, 6th and 7th Communist International Congresses elected member, International Control Commission.
1926-1935 secretary, International Control Commission. Author of 119 books and pamphlets.
