(Twelve-year-old Audrey Abbott dreams of becoming a writer...)
Twelve-year-old Audrey Abbott dreams of becoming a writer, but with her father's failing health and the family's shaky finances, it seems there is no room for what her overworked mother would surely call a childish fantasy. So Audrey keeps her writing a secret. That is, until she meets a mysterious old woman who seems able to read her mind. Audrey is surprised at how readily she reveals her secret to the woman. One day the old woman gives Audrey a peculiar bronze pen and tells her to "use it wisely and to good purpose." It turns out to be just perfect for writing her stories with. But as Audrey writes, odd things start happening. Did Beowulf, her dog, just speak to her? And what is that bumping under her bed at night? It seems that whatever she writes with the pen comes true. However, things don't always happen in the way that she wants or expects. In fact, it's quite difficult to predict what writing with the pen will do. Could the pen be more of a curse than a gift? Or will Audrey be able to rewrite the future in the way that she wishes---and save her father's life?

You'd think that someone with a name like Harry Houdini Marco would be deft and skillful, but Harry could only occasionally catch even an easy fly ball without making some dumb error. On top of that, most of his friends' families were moving to the suburbs. It would have been a long, dreary summer, but then a Mr. Mazeeck showed up and turned out to be more than he seemed.

Abby O’Malley is a girl who likes things to make sense. School makes sense, and her best friend Paige makes sense (most of the time), but Abby’s flighty mother never makes sense. Abby’s mom seems to think that she and Abby are descended from a line of witches, and that they have special powers—psychic powers that don’t make sense at all. The problem is, Abby knows that she can do certain things that other people can’t. Sometimes, when she holds an object in her hand, she’s overpowered by sounds and pictures that show where the owner is and what he or she is doing. Abby thinks of this as her “magic nation,” because that is what her kindergarten teacher told her it was called. Now 11, Abby has an inkling that her teacher may have been saying it was her “imagination,” which unfortunately, she knows it is not. Now some things are happening in her mother’s detective agency—cases where Abby’s magic nation thing might come in handy. But does Abby want to admit that such a sensible girl could have such an unsensible power?

"You must be very careful, Harry!" the strange Mr. Mazzeeck warns before he leaves. "This magic oil is extremely powerful! And remember, no one must ever find out!" "Find out what?" Harry wonders now. Carefully, he rubs the oil into his shoulders, and feels a strong tingling sensation. He rusehs to the mirror and sees them-- spreading out behind him, from his head to his ankles! "Wings!" Harry gasps. As he fans them slowly, he feels himself lift off the ground. "Whoopee!" he shouts. "I can fly!"

Robin was always "wandering off" (her mother's words) to get away from the confusion she felt inside her. It was not until Robin's father found a permanent job at the McCurdy ranch, after three years as a migrant worker, that Robin had a place to wander to. As time went by the Velvet Room became more and more of a haven for her--a place to read and dream, a place to bury one's fears and doubts, a place to count on. The Velvet Room, first published in 1965, was a Junior Library Guild selection, and part of Scholastic Books' Arrow Book Club.

Eleven-year-old Matthew Hamilton–a.k.a. The Hamster–is new in town, and just about the first thing he does is get lost in the woods of Rathburn Park. It’s a typical boneheaded thing to do, and Matt is trying to decide whether starvation is preferable to the embarrassment of a rescue party when a little dog trots past him. Matt senses that the dog wants him to follow, but as soon as they emerge from the trees, the dog vanishes. Matt keeps wondering about the dog as he starts to learn more about the town’s strange past. Owned by a wealthy family named Rathburn, the whole town burned down decades ago and was rebuilt nearby. The old ruins are still hidden in the forest, too rickety and dangerous to go near. But they are also best avoided for another reason–ghosts. Still, Matt can’t resist looking for the dog, and as he’s looking, he meets a girl dressed in antique clothes who calls herself Amelia Rathburn. Are she and the dog both ghosts? Or is there another explanation for the strange goings-on in Rathburn Park?

92206 (6 cassettes/7.5 hours) "The face was grinning, its loose lips stretched wide to reveal sharp white teeth, its long red tongue lolling to one side. Frozen with fear, Tymmon gasped, 'God help me,' and sat motionless, waiting for death. Waiting for the cruel grip of sharp fangs...." --from *Song of the Gargoyle* When Tymmon was a child, he'd taken pleasure in his father, Komus, and his gentle, clownish ways. But at 13, Tymmon is a child no longer, and he resents the laughter and joking ridicule that accompany his father's antics as the court jester of Austerneve. When Komus is kidnapped one night, Tymmon barely escapes into the forest. Alone, and angry that he cannot avenge his father as a true night would, Tymmon wanders aimlessly through the austere towns and villages of the country peasants, his only companion, Troff, a gargoyle possessing enchanted powers. In his travels, Tymmon discovers that he has inherited something from his father far greater than noble lineage--the ability to survive by his own talents. Soon, with the aid of Troff, Tymmon sets out to find and to free his father. "Snyder has created a world both grim and gallant, both realistic and marvelously imagined." --Author Lloyd Alexander
