Peshkov, Zinovii was born in 1884 in Nizhnii Novgorod (now Gorkii). Brother of Iakov Sverdlov.

Involved in revolutionary activity. In 1900 became close to Maksim Gorkii (Peshkov), who adopted him. Lived with Gorkii in Kuokkala (Finland), and went abroad with him.
Stayed with him at Capri. Left to serve in the French Foreign Legion. Fought in World War I, and lost an arm during the battle of Verdun.
During the Russian Civil War, member of the French mission of General Janin in Siberia, 1919-1920. Returned to France and to the Foreign Legion. As a former revolutionary, had under his command many former tsarist officers, who, after defeat in the Civil War, fled to the West and joined the Legion.
During World War II, escaped to Britain just before the French collapse and became a prominent member of De Gaulle’s staff. Appointed representative of the Free French with Chiang Kai-shek’s government in China, 1944. After the capitulation of Japan, became the French representative at the Allied Military Control Committee in Japan under General McArthur.
Soon thereafter, retired with the rank of General of the French Army.
