Zo Myo was born in 843 in Japan.

Zo Myo was ordained a priest while still a child at Mount Hiei. In 855 he went to Enryaku-ji and studied there. In 867 he received the bodhisattva precepts and furthered his study of the Tendai doctrines under Jikaku and Chisho, respectively the third and fifth chief priests of Enryaku-ji.
Later Zo Myo received the Buddhist precepts from Enchin (867) and was appointed head priest of Onjoji Temple. Ordained chief abbot of Tendai Sect (906) and then Sojo (bishop) (923). In 925 he was appointed to the nationwide position of administrator of priests. In 925 he was appointed to the nationwide position of administrator of priests.
