He devoted himself to the study of art of Choshitsu (painting and carving of lacquer wares) and, after diligently modeling the patterns of sekishu (art of creating elaborately coated red lacquer ware with patterns in relief) of China and other forms of lacquer art of China.
His love of nature and elegant pursuits brought him into close contact with such famous men of letters as Kaioku Nukina, Hozen Eiraku, Priest Unge and Shochiku Shinozaki.
