In 1917 Hara Zuien graduated from the history course of Tokyo University.
Career
After teaching at the Himeji Higher School and Tohoku University, he was appointed professor at Kyoto University. Specialized in the ancient history of Europe, particularly of Greece. He was a dean of Kyoto University's School of Literature and a member of the Japan Science Council.
