In 1241, he was received in audience by Dogen, founder of the Soto Sect in Japan, at the Eiheiji Temple. After succeeding Koun Ejo, a high priest, Gien was nominated as the fourth chief priest of the Eiheiji Temple, one of the headquarters of the Soto Sect located in Fukui Prefecture. He retired to the Ho-onji Temple in his late years.
