A. Duncan Simpson was born in 1862 in Scotland, United Kingdom.
Mr. Simpson arrived in the U. S. in 1880, and after a few years in Birmingham, Ala., settled in Gadsden in 1889, later became a naturalized citizen. After starting practice in the city, his skill as a designer attracted much attention. It can almost be said that Mr. Simpson built Gadsden, having planned such structures as the Carnegie Library, several churches, the High School and elementary buildings, the Dwight Cotton Mills, with homes for the officers and cottages for the workmen, also many residences.
He became a member of the Alabama Chapter, A. I. A. in 1928.
