Treadwell was born on December 23, 1866 in Redding, Connecticut, United States; the son of Aaron Treadwell and Lois (Mead) Treadwell.
Treadwell received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1888 and a Master of Science in 1890 from the Wesleyan University. Also he earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago in 1898.
Treadwell began his career as an assistant in natural history at Wesleyan University in 1888. Three years later he took a position of a professor of zoology and geology at Miami University. Then in 1900, Aaron became a professor of biology at Vassar College. Fourteen years later he held the position of a professor of zoology at the same college. Since 1937 Treadwell was a professor emeritus at Vassar College. Also he served as an instructor at the Marine Biological Laboratory.

2012Treadwell was a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Zoologists (vice president, 1921), American Society of Naturalists, Phi Beta Kappa and Chi Psi.
On June 15, 1892 Aaron Treadwell married Sarah (Hill) Treadwell. They had 2 children.
