Painted animals from childhood. At 16 decided to make painting his profession. Painted portraits and occasional landscapes, 1879-1891, after that chiefly ideal figure pictures, including one mural decoration.
Was discoverer of the law of the protective coloration of the animal kingdom, first made public 1896, in article reprinted in Smithsonian report, 1897.
