(In his book I Never Knew That About Colorado, author and ...)
In his book I Never Knew That About Colorado, author and historian Abbott Fay presents a unique compilation of long-forgotten and little-publicized happenings of Colorado history. While this book is not essentially a book of trivia, some of the items might be considered trivial. Unless an item is described as questionable, it is the result of cross-documentation that indicates it really happened beyond a reasonable doubt. This book is great fun as the reader browses the fringe of Colorado history.

(Wine has been produced from grapes grown in Colorado sinc...)
Wine has been produced from grapes grown in Colorado since the earliest territorial days, but the industry never rebounded after Prohibition. Since 1980 there has been a rebound in the Colorado wine industry. In fact, many wine experts are declaring that high altitudes, a consistent climate, and warm days and cool nights combine to make Colorado wines the best in the nation. The Story of Colorado Wines gives a short history of wine production in Colorado together with a history of each individual retail winery or vineyard in Colorado. There are also directions to the wineries, details about their amenities such as wine tasting, and a phone number to call for further information. For over five decades, Abbott Fay has dedicated his life to exploring the history of Colorado. He is the author of ten books and is an adjunct professor of history at three Colorado colleges. When he became fascinated with the success of the Colorado wine industry, Abbott decided to search out not only the stories of the great wineries in Colorado, but also the fascinating history behind the Colorado winemaking industry.

Did you know that: - Several explorers claimed a wooden sailing ship was found near Red Cliff in 1879 stuck in ice in a cave filled with crystals and gold? - Delta women went on strike in the 1880's, refusing to cook evening meals until sidewalks were built and streets paved? - Silverton sprouted the first nationally recognized "cowboy band" in 1885? - In 1885, elephants pushed a train over Boreas Pass - the worlds highest railroad crossing? Plus ninety-six other amazing stories . . .

(For those of you who think that everything significant th...)
For those of you who think that everything significant that happens in Colorado happens on the Eastern Slope, Abbott Fay explains in detail why the counties of Mesa and Delta on the Western Slope have accumulated a significant degree of international interest over the years. For example: 1)McCall's magazine once published an article on Grand Junction entitled "America's Most Radioactive City;" 2) Tom "Silent" Smith, the man who trained "Seabiscuit," lived in Grand Junction and worked on a ranch in Unaweep Canyon; and 3) in 1898, a huge apple was exhibited at the Delta County Fair in Delta, which is believed to have set a national record measuring twenty-seven inches in circumference, nine inches in diameter, and weighing thirty-four and three-quarter ounces.

(Colorado definitely is known as a ski state, but did you ...)
Colorado definitely is known as a ski state, but did you know the sport dates back over 100 years to the days when it was called "snowshoeing." Twelve-foot boards and a long stick was used in those days. Abbott Fay traces the development of Colorado skiing, including the impact the 10th Mountain Division had on it after World War II. Old photos and recent developments make this book a "must have."
