Abe Seimei was born in 921 in Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture), Japan.
A descendant of Abe-no-Miushi, he learned lunar and solar calendar calculation from Tadayuki and Yasunori Kamo and also knew about astronomy and various kinds of divination. He was appointed by the Imperial Court Temmon Hakase (doctor of astronomy), Sakyo-Dayu (Headman of the Left Ward of Kyoto), Lord of Harima (Hy5go Prefecture). In later years, some people mixed his art of astronomical calculation with occultism, with the result that he became a half-legendary person. He left some books on his studies.
